I started the first grade in 1954. Our school went from the first grade through grade 8. It was located in a very small town and was made up of students almost entirely from the country side. A lot of good memories were made at that school.

One, I remember well, was what an honor it was to get chosen to go outside and dust off the blackboard erasers. Now this may not sound like much to you, but this was a special event for us..and if you were chosen, it was a special honor.

We would take them out to the old coal house that was still standing from the years where the school used coal heaters. And we would use the walls of the coal house to beat off the chalk from the erasers. Now this was fun to us (didn't take much to amuse us in those days, I guess  ), and we always made it last just as long as possible.

When we were in the seventh grade, we moved into the basement of the school. This was were the kitchen and lunchroom had once been. We were down there by ourselves. Now this was really something great. Our room was much larger than the others and we were kind of in a world of our own.Our teacher let us take some tables and with his help we brought in dirt, plants, water etc. and with sides on the table and waterproofing, we had a miniature world with water, plants, soil and tiny creatures such as tadpoles, salamanders , etc. Now this was something special that none of the other grades had.

School was kind of like a family in those days. Everyone knew everyone and parents had a big part in the activities. We shared the good times and the bad as a community. And I personally think we need the community schools once again. They were special.

I enjoyed school and I often think about how blessed we were to have teachers that really cared about their students and what we learned. And how blessed we were to have had the opportunity to attend a school were lasting friendships were made and the good times far, far outweighed the bad. Those were special days and they will never be forgotten. Those were truly Good Old Days.

Sweet memories.
