Up In The Attic

by Gene Minix

Up in the attic
Are priceless treasures to me.
And they always bring memories
When I go there to see.

Old letters and photographs
Of long ago times.
Brown boxes packed with memories
Are always a joy to find.

Baby clothes and little shoes.
Grandpa's tear stained Bible and glasses are there.
And the golden combs
Grandma used to put in her hair.

Daddy's medals from the Army
And a dress that Mama made.
Our first silverware and china
And a box of bills marked paid.

Love letters that we wrote
Back in our courting days.
And notes our children wrote
Make me smile at what they say.

Old cowboy guns I had as a kid.
And the dolls you played with as a little girl.
My pictures of Roy Rogers and Trigger
And the baton that you twirled.

A lifetime of memories
Packed in the attic fair.
They always bring sweet memories
Each time I venture up there.

COUNTING MY BLESSINGS

by Gene Minix

I went to bed early last night

And I said my prayers.

But I could not get to sleep

So I got up and down the stairs.

~

I went to the kitchen.

Poured a cup of hot coffee for me.

And from the cookie jar by the window,

Chocolate chips, I took two or three.

~~

I went to the table.

Sit down and took pen in hand.

I started counting my blessings.

Oh, what a rich, rich man.

~~~
I watched the list grow and grow.
Thak you, Dear Lord, I said.
And with a heart of gratitude,
I made my way back to bed.
NEVER TOO EARLY
~
by Gene Minix
~
Learn to be patient.
Learn how to wait.
For God is never too early
And He is never too late.
~~
Put your trust in Him
Even if you don't understand.
And don't get discouraged,
Just hold fast to His hand.
~~~

He knows you better

Than you know you.

And only what a best

Will the Lord do!

~~~~~
So put your trust in the Lord.
Be patient and wait.
God is never too early
And He is never too late.
THE CIRCUS IS IN TOWN
*
by Gene Minix
*
Not a sad face can be found.
The circus is coming to town.
What a thrill to watch the parade go by
With tigers and lions and horses stepping high.
*
Clowns dressed in all kinds of clothes
With painted faces and big round nose.
Giant elephants walk by holding each other's tails.
And painted wagons form a long trail.
**
Pretty ladies in golden dress.
Midgets and strongmen and all the rest.
Everyone smiles, there are no frowns.
The circus is coming to town.
****
Soon the big top will reach high.
Colored balloons will fill the air.
Three rings out on the floor.
And the Ringmaster by the door
****
Invites everyone to come on down.
The Circus is in town.
ZEKE
*
by Gene Minix
**
It was a deep bark that little basset had.
And even when happy, his big eyes looked sad.
A true comedian he surely was through and through
And to see him, he'd sure tickle you.
He could be a little stubborn, it's true.
But for a little basset that's nothing new.
It was a joy to watch him at play.
You know, I'm kind of missing Zeke today.
He's been gone now for a while
But in thoughts he still brings a smile.
And not one day did he ever fail
To say "I love you" with those eyes and a wagging tail.
BACK THEN
*
by Gene Minix
**
School was out for the summer
And what grand and exciting days.
We chased butterflies across the meadows,
We ran and we played.
***
We climbed the old oak tree
And we lay on a bed of soft green grass
And gazing up into the sky,
We watched soft clouds float past.
****
We rode bicycles down the lane,
The sun shown so bright.
We collected stray dogs
And counted stars at night.
*****
We didn't have a care
In those days of long ago.
We marched to a different drum,
The "real world" we didn't know.
*******
We didn't worry about tomorrow.
It was our day in the sun.
It seemed the day moved slow
And we dreamed of being twenty-one.
*******
The summer days they were
Long and they were slow to pass.
Now they move so very fast.
They move to very fast.
SWEET CANDY
by Gene Minix
It was many years ago
But I remember it like it was yesterday.
We'd go to the little country store
Down from the farm aways.
Just a little country store.
I still remember it so dear.
There wasn't much on the shelves
But I remember that candy counter clear.
Penny candy and big nickel bars, too.
Sure made a little boy's eyes glow.
I can taste it still today.
How I loved that sweet candy so.
